Frequently Asked Questions

  • At Allergy One, we use a multi-dip well method. A small amount of each allergen extract is placed into separate wells on a tray. A special applicator is dipped into the allergen, then pressed firmly onto the skin to introduce the allergen. In some cases, the applicator may be gently twisted to help the allergen enter the skin more effectively.

  • The testing process itself takes about 10 minutes. After the allergens are applied, you will wait for approximately 20 minutes so any reactions can develop. A clinician will then assess and measure the test sites to determine any allergic responses.

  • Please do not take any antihistamines (prescription or over-the-counter) for one week prior to your test, otherwise you may not be eligible for an allergy test. If you are unsure whether your medication will affect your allergy test, we recommend speaking with your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

  • Please inform us before your appointment if any of the following apply:

    • You are currently pregnant

    • You have severe, unstable asthma

    • You have dermographism (a skin condition that causes raised, inflamed areas from minor pressure)

If needed, we will discuss alternative allergy testing options with you.

  • The initial consultation will cost $66 out of pocket. Your Allergy Doctor will then discuss with you your treatment plan and the subsequent costs.

  • No Doctor referral is needed.

  • During your first consultation, the doctor will take a detailed medical history and discuss your allergy symptoms. If suitable, your allergies will be tested using a multi-dip well. We test for most allergies, particularly air-borne allergies, however we do not test for food allergies due to this being a complex and time-intensive process.

  • Yes, we do - you will need to discuss with your allergy Doctor on what these are.

  • It is normal to experience mild redness, swelling, or itchiness at the test sites, which usually resolves within a few hours. You can:

    • Take an antihistamine after the test if needed (unless otherwise advised)

    • Resume normal activities immediately after your appointment

    • Avoid scratching the test sites to prevent irritation or infection

If you notice any unusual or concerning symptoms, please contact Allergy One or seek medical advice promptly.
